Imphal, June 20 2016:
All Manipur Students' Union(AMSU) today said that the student body is well-prepared to launch a series of campaign in case the State Government cannot efficiently check the illegal price hike and adulteration of essential food items by shopkeepers.
AMSU information and publicity secretary L Surbala Devi said that AMSU has always been against food adulteration and illegal price hike of essential commodities.
Shopkeepers duping the consumers which is against the Consumers' Protection Act 1986 and Food Safety and Standard Act 2006, is illegal.
As such, any shopkeeper or trader can be penalised.
However, in Manipur, these fraudulent activities are more or less backed by the leaders of the State and such act can be termed as nothing but a betrayal of its own people.
Overlooking the well-being of the people, State leaders are working hand in hand with traders and shopkeepers for their personal gain, the student body alleged.
In other States like Mizoram, Assam and Tripura, prices of food commodities are put up outside the respective shop on daily basis.
However, in Manipur, prices of essential food items fluctuate on the will of the shopkeeper.
Tampering food package has been widely reported.
It would be appreciated if Weight and Measure Department could initiate necessary steps to check such activity routinely.
If the State Government and departments concerned view the matter as something that could not be carried out efficiently as early as possible, All Manipur Students' Union will extensively carry out necessary steps.
