Fishery Dept Gears Up To Meet Fish Demand For Chakkouba

The State Fishery Department has set its eyes on an estimated production of over 62,000 kgs of fish in the fish fair to be held at Hapta Kangjeibung on November 14 in connection with Ningol Chakkouba festival.
In a brief interaction with reporters at Hapta Kangjeibung today, Fishery Minister Md Nashir said, excluding indigenous fish varieties, the fair is expected to witness sale of more than 62000 kgs of fish this year.
The fair will open at 1 pm with a formal function, the Minister said.
Rohu, katla, mirgal varieties which are more than 3 kgs per fish would be put on sale at Rs 230 per kg.
Fishes of these varieties which weigh less than 3 kgs would cost Rs 190 per kg, he added.

The Minister also said that grass carp and silver carp would cost Rs 160 and Rs 110 respectively.
Saying that all the fishes which are to be put on sale are produced by different fish farmers of the State, the Minister added that no imported fishes would be sold in the fair.
Indigenous fish varieties like pengba and ngaton would also be available in the fair at Rs 550 and Rs 400-600 respectively.
Informing that around 77 fish farmers would take part in the fair, Md Nashir said that the State Fishery Department would encourage the fish farmers by awarding Rs 60,000, Rs 40,000 and Rs 20,000 to the first, second and third prize winners respectively.
Rs 5000 each would also be awarded to 25 other farmers as consolation prizes and Rs 15000 to a selected fish farmer who produces indigenous fish varieties, he added.
It may be mentioned that 64924 kgs of fish were sold in the last year's fair.
