Imphal, September 05 2024:
Assam Rifles held a wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial in Delhi to pay tributes to lance naik Vikram Singh, a valiant Assam Rifles soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.
According to a PRO IGAR (S) release, on August 18, 1994, Vikram Singh and his team undertook a perilous mission in the treacherous terrain of Sangkhomei-Willong.
As they approached Yangkhonou, they came under intense fire from insurgents.
Vikram displayed unwavering courage, swiftly advancing through the danger zone to engage the enemy.
He succumbed to his gunshot wounds, recounted the PRO.
Rfn/GD Arun Singh Negi, the son of the martyr, currently serving in the same unit as his late father, also attended the solemn wreath-laying ceremony with his wife, two sons, and his mother (wife of the martyr).
During the event, they were honoured in recognition of Vikram Singh's extraordinary valour, the release added.
Assam Rifles also conducted a wreath-laying ceremony for naib subedar LB Thapa, rifleman CB Darjee and naik Chandra Bahadur Sarki of the 4 Assam Rifles.
On September 5, 1970, a convoy protection team from the 4 Assam Rifles, consisting of one junior commissioned officer and 10 other ranks, came under insurgent ambush while conducting convoy protection on the Mao-Tadubi road.
In the ensuing firefight, naib subedar LB Thapa, rifleman CB Darjee and naik Chandra Bahadur Sarki sustained fatal gunshot wounds, heroically sacrificing their lives for the nation, said the PRO in another release, adding that Assam Rifles paid tribute to these brave souls by honouring them at the War Memorial, recognising their ultimate sacrifice for the country, made without regard for personal safety.
