Imphal, May 27 2024:
Informing that farmers will commence farming and cultivating in the farmlands of Lamphelpat from this year onwards, Loumi Kanglup Lamphel has urged all concerned not to disturb the same, while appealing to the government to look for a more suitable place to relocate the ponies.
In a press meet held at Manipur Press Club here Monday, general secretary N Ibohal Meitei said that Loumi Kanglup had set up the farmlands in Lamphelpat for cultivation since 1963-64 but was unable to grow crops after 1966.As such, the Lup is preparing to re-cultivate the land from this year onwards and urged all concerned not to interfere with the same.
He further informed that the government allotted 30 acres in Lamphelpat for pony conservation.
However, after the area was developed as a water body, the farmlands in the area again could not be cultivated.
While the farmers support the pony conservation efforts, all of the ponies have been herded into the farmlands, preventing any farming.
Thus, he urged for allowing the farmers to continue farming in the land, and relocate the ponies to a more suitable location instead.
