Imphal, January 27 2023: The joint committee of six student bodies submitted a recommendation for inclusion of drug-related contents in the academic syllabus in order to make the fight against drugs effective in the state.

The recommendation was based on the opinions and suggestions given by several resource persons during a special discourse on 'Diagnosis and Prognosis of Issues of Drugs in Manipur' organised by the student bodies at Shiroy banquet hall of Hotel Imphal on January 21 .

Informing this in a statement, the organisations said that the first point in the recommendation is the need for academic and scientific studies on different aspects of drug abuse such as social, environment, economic, geo-political, narco-political, legal & investigation, border affairs and drug use prevention for in - depth diagnosis and prognosis of the issue.

the statement stressed the need for in elusion of drug related contents in the academic syllabus to create awareness among the young minds and deter them from abusing drugs and substance.

It should also include facilities for counselling with psychologists in educational institutions for timely prevention of drug abuse among the students, 'There is the strong need to accept constructive criticism from all sections of the society in order to make the war on drugs campaign effective and to bring about a public movement.

At the same time, inter-agency cooperation for faster investigation process and fast tracking justice delivery system is a must, the joint statement said, while stressing the need for expanding the war on drugs till the national level since this is an issue of inter-state and international drug ring.

Drug related laws like ND&PS Act need further amendment to make them more effective in lighting the drug issue.

Capital punishment for certain drug related crimes is a must, the statement added.

The student bodies also recommended framing a special witness protection law and initiatives to encourage the public to become witnesses.

It is also crucial to fill up the gap among government, CSOs, investigating agencies, lawyers, local clubs, Meira Paibi organisations and other relevant stakehold -ers in order to take the fight against drugs to the next level, the statement added.
