CCpur, August 19 2024:
A delegation of civil society organisations (CSOs) belonging to Zou community visited Behiang village bordering Myanmar on Monday to voice their opposition against the construction of India-Myanmar border fencing in the area.
The delegation met officials of Border Roads Task Force (BRTF), Assam Rifles, localdignitaries and chief of Behiang village to hold discussion and raise their concerns over border fencing.
The delegation categorically told BRTF and AR officials that no border fencing should be constructed without consultation and collaboration with local communities, CSOs and Behiang Area Chiefs' Association.
The delegation asked authorities to rethink over construction of border fencing and halt construction process until a more thorough and participatory framework is established.
Later, the CSO delegation issued a stern warning to both the Central and state governments and called for halting border fencing construction work immediately.
If the construction work proceeds in defiance of the protest, then the government shall be accountable for any unwanted incident, conflict or repercussion, they warned.
