Mob violence victim seeks legal action

Imphal, May 12 2021: Claiming that some individuals orchestrated a mob, that assaulted her, robbed her and burnt her house, by asking her to come and collect some money, one Longjam Jibanlata of Kakwa has demanded that legal action be initiated up against those involved in the mob violence.

Addressing a press meet on Wednesday, Jibanlata said that on February 27, children of her elder brothers got into a quarrel with some people of Naorem Kollup and in the incident, one RK Casper succumbed.

In the incident, the other party (Naorem group) assaulted her handicapped elder brother, who was not involved in the quarrel.

After the incident, the locals banished her elder brother's family.

They also vandalised her house, which is separated from her brother's residence by fence.

They not only vandalised her paddy stocks but also robbed of her jewelleries in the incident.

Moreover, the mod destroyed all the vegetables she planted in her homestead garden.

The incident forced her family to flee the locality.

During the period, her family was facing financial problem.

In the meantime, Naorem Geetabali asked her to come and collect some money out of Rs 8.5 lakh Geetabali owed to her.

After that, she went to Geetabali's house on April 27 to collect the money but a mob of over 200 people led by around 20 men and women of the Naorem clan assaulted her, snatched her gold chain and mobile phone along with her purse.

Though she recovered her purse, she found Rs 30,000 missing from her purse and police are yet to recover her properties.

She also alleged that the mob forced to remove her shirt, snatching her clothes and parading her semi naked.

In the meantime, the mob burnt her house and the perpetrators along with JAC formed against the death of Casper threatened her to sign on a blank paper to make claim that she burnt her house by herself.

Luckily, police rescued her and the fire fighters put off the fire.

Now, they are spreading false claim of her burning her own house, she said while appealing to the police department to investigate the incident and book those behind the mob.

Claiming that Naorem families are getting political backing, she appealed to CSOs and women organisations to help her get justice.
