Imphal, October 20 2024:
Tangkhul Katamnao Long Imphal (TKLI) has expressed deep concern over the absence of a regular vice-chancellor (VC) at Manipur Technical University (MTU) since the previous appointment was cancelled by a Manipur High Court order on January 27, 2023 .
Stating that the union is alarmed by the prolonged lack of leadership, severely hindering the university's functioning, TKLI highlighted that the current VC of MTU is also serving as the VC of Dhanamanjuri University and holding additional post of commissioner of university & higher education.
Similarly, the current registrar of MTU is also the director of MOBC, while the assistant registrar-in-charge is working as the finance officer of the university on deputation, the union said in a release.
It pointed out that this overlap in responsibilities has created a vacuum in the administrative setup, making the smooth operation of the university practically impossible.
The union stressed that even eight years after the university's establishment in 2016, it still does not offer higher courses such as M Tech or PhD programs, depriving students of advanced academic opportunities.
TKLI condemned the trend of interim bureaucratic appointments in educational institutions, which they argue has resulted in numerous complications and negatively impacted students.
TKLI strongly criticised the government's short-sightedness, stating that the future of society is tied to the future of its students, and the current situation places that future at risk.
The union demanded the immediate appointment of a new VC or the reinstatement of the previously appointed one for the benefit of the students and the future of the university.
The statement warned that if their demands are not met, TKLI would be compelled to take necessary actions to ensure justice is delivered and the university's leadership crisis is resolved.
