Imphal, August 10 2025: A three-month certificate course on Meetei pung (drum), Ishei (song), and Jagoi (dance) commenced on Saturday at Lainingthou Sanamahi Shanglen, Uphong Yumpham, Haying Khongban.

The programme is being organised by Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board (LSTB) to promote the traditional art forms and better understanding of their origins, particularly among the youth.

Speaking on the occasion, LSTB member secretary Shivadutta Luwang pointed out that culture cannot be considered developed merely by wearing traditional clothes, applying Leisa (mark on forehead), and oblation to God.

He stressed the need to work with a mission to develop culture, adding that a strong indigenous identity can only be achieved when all indigenous communities of the land unite as one.

He said that the course aims to strengthen cultural knowledge and preserve Pung, Ishei, and Jagoi, which hold a central place in Sanamahi religion.

About 130 participants have enrolled for the training, which will be conducted twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The inaugural event was attended by Manipur University of Culture vice-chancellor Prof Paonam Gunindro as chief guest and presided over by LSTB vice-president Bidyapati Senjam (Wakhal Lamjingba) .

LSTB senior board member Keisham Ibomcha, board member Namoijam Tomba Meetei, 'Maibarel' Maisnam Ibobi Meetei, 'Pung Hanba' Khumanthem Kashiram Meetei, Tshei Hanba' Keithellakpam Mohori Meetei, and Tshei Hanba' Sarangthem Tharongangbi Devi were guests of honour.

Elderly artistes were felicitated as part of the programme in recognition of their contributions to promotion of culture and art.
