PANDM plans drive against tobacco items

Welcoming state government's order to impose a one-year ban on chewable tobacco products in the state.
Peoples' Action for National Democratic Movement (PANDM) has extended its support to the government decision and appealed to business establishments and shops to immediately cease selling these items.
In a release, PANDM secretary general S Brojen Meitei stated that as government machinery alone cannot fully implement the ban order, it would conduct surprise checks and hand over violators to police and food safety officials as support to the government.
"If anyone is found defying the ban order, there will be no negotiation but punished as per the law," the secretary cautioned, while adding that people involved in trading tobacco items should give it up or face the consequences.
PANDM then called upon the Food Safety Department to strictly implement the order and carry out frequent checks, especially wholesale shops operating at Sareng Galli in Khwairamband Keithel and Masjid road.
It also urged Manipur police, especially personnel of City police station to seize the prohibited items to strictly enforce the ban.
PANDM reiterated that any person found stocking and selling the banned tobacco products Will be handed over to the police and press food safety officials to take legal action against them.
It also urged government authorities concerned to ensure that no misunderstanding arises between government and CSOs on the matter.
