Imphal, October 15 2024:
Assam Rifles organised an awareness programme for residents of Chongjang, Tengnoupal district and nearby villages, highlighting the growing issue of e-waste and its harmful effects on the environment and public health.
The programme conducted as a part of observance of International E-waste Day, was aimed at educating the villagers on proper disposal of electronic devices and dangers posed by improper handling of e-waste.
A total of 22 youths, and 41 locals, including village chiefs, attended the event held on Monday.
The programme covered key topics such as* safely discarding old electronics, securely erasing personal data from devices before recycling, and adopting sustainable practices in energy consumption.
It also encouraged villagers to contribute to a greener planet by reducing their carbon footprint.
E-waste and carbon footprint pose environmental challenges, particularly in hill regions.
Improper disposal contaminates soil, water, and ecosystems, while excessive energy consumption accelerates deforestation and climate change.
Residents should adopt responsible e-waste disposal methods and reduce their carbon footprint by embracing renewable energy and sustainable living to protect their natural surroundings for future generations, said a PRO IGAR (S) release.
