World Mental Health Day observed

Imphal, October 10 2021: District Health Society, Imphal East in association with District Mental Health Programme, Imphal East observed the World Mental Health Day under the theme of 'Mental Health in an Unequal World' at Panchayat Bhavan, Porompat on Sunday.

Speaking as the chief guest of the observance, Imphal East DC Khumanthem Diana reminded all concerned that maintaining mental health, physical health and social is important for good health.

Poor mental health often leads to an increase in suicidal tendencies and consequent fatalities.

Mental health problems are common among people in the age group of 15-29 years, most of which stem from poor living conditions, unstable family and others.

As such, the young need to learn to be contented with what they have and work hard for what they want to be.

Adolescents should stop comparing themselves with their peers negatively, she added.

The DC continued that the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the mental health greatly.

Additionally, successful people have also broken down and suffered from mental health problems, she said and expressed that what made them successful is the ability to work hard and fight through the problems.

Stating that mental health problems are treatable with early and proper diagnosis, Diana said that there is no need to feel dejected over the same.

Thus, she urged all concerned to contact the State Helpline 104 for seeking help with regard to mental health.

She further urged against stigmatisation and discrimination of mental health patients, adding that the near and dear ones of the patients should extend support and care to help the patients improve their conditions.

Presided over by Imphal East CMO Dr L Indira, the observance was attended by District AIDS Control Officer, Imphal East Dr N Romila as guest of honour.

As part of the observance, a poster on 'Symptoms of common mental disorder' was released along with distribution of prizes to winners of a poster campaign held earlier.
