Derogatory remarks against Mary Kom decried

Imphal, July 30 2021: Five tribal civil organisations have expressed dismay over the alleged derogatory remarks made against sixtime world boxing champion MC Mary Kom on social media.

In a joint press release issued on Friday, Federation of All Tribal Youth Clubs, Manipur (FATYCM), Zeliangrong Baudi, Manipur, Zeliangrong Youth Front (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland), Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur and Chiru Naga Union General HQ said that they were really dismayed and totally shocked to come across derogatory remarks and comments circulated via various social media groups which were made against boxing legend MC Mary Kom, who, unfortunately, lost the tough fight against the Colombian boxer Ingrit Valencia at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 .

The derogatory remarks made against Mary Kom in various social media groups have revealed the real 'communal feeling' which may have been deeply embedded in the hearts of some people, the five tribal bodies said, while asking the state government not to remain a silent spectator when some people are spreading the messages of hatred via social media groups which may be detrimental to the fragile social fabric of the state.

The joint release of the tribal bodies further said that MC Mary Kom is a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and represented this great country India in Tokyo Olympics 2020, therefore any derogatory remarks or comments made against her is an insult to the country and the parliamentarian.

Such acts are anti-national and deserve severe punishment as per law of the land.

"The great reputation earned by MC Mary Kom as a well-disciplined sportsperson in her boxing career through hard work, dedication and commitment unlike other sportsper-sons, who lodged complaint for his or her loss against the judges and juries, had exhibited the tribal nature of simplicity, trust and respect to the decision of the judges and juries," it continued.

"The tribal civil society organisations highly hail the boxing legend magnificent MC Mary Kom, who is a six-time world champion.

The tribal people considered her as the winner of the fight and all-time champion although she lost the fight at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 unluckily.

Any other sportsperson even if he or she may have enjoyed the support and encouragement of their community is doubtful of reaching the level of six-time world boxing champion MC Mary Kom.

The achievements of MC Mary Kom may not be easy to surpass by any other sportspersons, therefore the tribal people in particular are really proud of this tribal woman boxer's achievements which will be inerasable in the pages of history," the joint release concluded.
