Imphal, May 27 2024:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee observed the 60th death anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru at Congress Bhavan today.
Congress leaders including former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi and MPCC president MLA K Meghachandra paid floral tributes to the statue of Nehru during the observance.
On the occasion, Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Ibobi said Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India who played an important role in the movement that gained India her independence from the British on August 15, 1947 .
Nehru along with other freedom fighters including Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, under Mahatma Gandhi's leadership resisted the British for India's independence, said Ibobi.
Nehru's role after India gained freedom from the British was crucial.
In his efforts to build a united India, he was jailed.
His contributions are overwhelming and he is respected by all Indians today, he added.
"India at the time of independence was poor and was marred with several issues.
Nehru played important roles in making India as we see today.
And for this, he is known as the architect of modem India," Ibobi said.
Ibobi called on the people and all Congressmen to revitalise Nehru's dream of making India united.
