Imphal, January 27, 2011:
To contest the by-election to the Konthoujam Assembly Constituency, which is scheduled to be held on February 14, a candidate of Trinamool Congress, Manipur Pradesh, Konthoujam Sarat today filed his nomination papers.
Backed by 30 proposers, with signatures, Sarat submitted three different nomination papers from his side to the Returning Officer.
MPP and BJP have already announced their respective decision of extending support to Sarat to ensure the defeat of Congress candidate in the by-election.
A resident of Konthoujam Lairembi Leikai, Sarat had contested in the general elections of 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
But he was narrowly beaten to the post by a mere 84 votes by S Budhichandra.
Talking to mediapersons after submitting his nomination papers, Sarat expressed strong confidence of winning the by-election this time since many like-minded political parties have pledged their support.
He asserted that as the former late MLA had done nothing for the development of Konthoujam Assembly Constituency and lost connection with the people, there is little chance of sympathy vote deciding the fate of the by-election this time.
In case he is elected, Sarat said taking care of the poor people and development of roads and bridges in his constituency would be his first priorities.
Trinamool Congress Manipur Pradesh president Kim Gangte, who was also present during the press conference, appealed to the voters to support K Sarat, who is being fielded as candidate of Trinamool Congress to defeat the Congress party in the by-election.
She also disclosed that as a Central Observer for the by-election, party's MP in Rajya Sabha KV Singh would be arriving at Imphal in first week of February while AK Rakesh, IAS and Imokba Jamir have been respectively appointed as election observer and expenditure observer.
