Imphal, July 19 2024:
Even as the Government has started providing compensations to farmers who could not engage in agriculture activities due to security reasons, farmers at highly sensitive Koutruk Village are still awaiting their turn to get the same benefit.
Speaking to the media at Koutruk today, one Ningthoujam Tomba urged the Government to compensate the farmers at Koutruk who were also compelled to abandon their fields due to repeated attacks by Kuki militants and their associates while distributing the second phase of farmer's compensation.
Saying that Koutruk in Imphal West is being designated as a highly sensitive and volatile village and there is a record of the village being attacked repeatedly by armed Kukis, he added that the farmers of Koutruk could not go to their fields for security reasons.
Tomba continued that farmers of the village (Koutruk) also submitted their documents to the department concerned like others after the Government announced that they will give some sort of compensation to the farmers affected by the violence.
However, only two farmers from Koutruk have received compensation from the Government till now, he said.
Maintaining that farmers of the village have been experiencing hardship all these months without any assistance from the Government, Tomba urged the Government to help the farmers of Koutruk.
Another farmer Thangjam Leima said that paddy lands at Koutruk and other nearby villages which are situated close to Kuki villages are still unattended as going to the fields is unsafe for the farmers.
She expressed desire for the Government to take up tight security measures in these villages so that the farmers could return to their fields.
