Imphal, January 09 2010: The 176th death anniversary of Maharaj Gambhir Singh was observed today at his memorial complex at Langthabal under the aegis of Art and Culture Department.

Offering of floral tributes to the photographs of king Gambhir Singh and younger brother Nara Singh, presentation of guard of honour, gun salute and sounding of the last post by a contingent of Manipur Rifles were the main highlight of the observance.

The observance held at the memorial complex being developed in a unique style was graced by MLA O Joy and Art and Culture Commissioner Pangambam Bharat as chief guest and president respectively.

It may be mentioned here that Gambhir Singh and Nara Singh were instrumental in setting up Manipur Levy at Cachar and eventually winning back sovereignty of Manipur from the hands of Burmese invaders in the aftermath of the Seven Years' Devastation (1819-1826) .

Speaking at the occasion, noted historian RK Jhaljit gave credit to Gambhir Singh for shaping identity of a modern Manipur.

He also called upon all to follow the footsteps of the late king in order to bring all round development in Manipur.

Social activist RK Ranendrajit expressed keen desire to develop the memorial complex in such a way that it can define Manipuri nationality and that it can serve as a subject of research for future generations.

He further lamented occupation of Langthabal capital by Assam Rifles.

In his speech, O Joy said that the memorial complex of Gambhir Singh should be developed as a complete foundation for consolidated Manipuri nation.

Along with it, Chandranadi and Leishang Hiden which were closely associated with the live of Gambhir Singh should be restored to the status of their glorious past.

Commissioner P Bharat said that the memorial complex was being developed under Special Plan Assistance at the cost of Rs 3 crores.

So far, land development work and construction of pedestal for the king's statue have been completed.

Though it is not included in the project, a library with gallery and inscription of the names of the soldiers of Manipur Levy are under consideration.

Plans are also afoot to renovate the Langthabal Palace, Bharat said.

Regarding Kangla renovation, he said that around Rs 2000 crores have been sanctioned and that larger portion of the renovation work have been completed.
