Imphal, January 31 2023: While urging the Government for a proper demarcation of boundary, the people of Phayeng have accused the Kangpoki Forest Division of encroaching on their land.

They alleged that forest land belonging to the village is being taken away and put under the jurisdiction of the Kangchup Chiru Reserved Forest under Kangpokpi Forest Division.

At a press meet called by the Phayeng Apunba Umang Committee, Phayeng Laibung Khullakpa, Ning- thoujam Toyai Chakpa said the people of Phayeng love forests and are closely associated with it.

About 231 acres of forest land including Phayeng Uyok and adjoining areas are part and parcel of the people of Phayeng.

The forest land is home to many sylvan deities, he said.

During 1927 and 1932, the forest land in question was given to the Phayeng people by the Manipur State Durbar as grazing ground, he claimed.

"Moreover, the Kangchup Chiru Reserve Forest was merely 2.59 sqkm in 1948.But, surprisingly, it has grown over the years to cover a huge area of about 6.88 sqkm.

How is this possible?" .

This increase in the area was revealed when Kangpokpi Forest Division sent a letter along with a proposed map of the Kangchup Chiru RF to the Imphal West DC on December 1 last, he said urging the Government to intervene and demarcate the land boundary properly at the earliest.
