Imphal, August 28 2017:
The 52nd foundation day of All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) was celebrated today at AMSU headquarters with Mohen Lourembam, former secretary general of AMSU as the chief guest .
Hoisting of AMSU's flag by its vice-president Laishram Peter and observance of two-minute silence as a mark of respect to departed AMSU leaders marked the celebration function .
Laishram Peter said AMSU was formed the day after four persons were killed in a protest against artificial famine in 1965.Since then, AMSU has spearheaded and participated in many movements concerning the State .
The student body has been instrumental in spreading awareness among students on various issues.
It would continue to work for the betterment of the society, he said .
Peter further said that it is the policy of the Govt of India to destroy the fabric of the society and the cordial relations between the hill and valley people by signing the Framework Agreement to appease a particular armed group .

He further said that AMSU would organise a cultural programme in the near future to promote the cultures of the hill and valley people and to explore the talents of the State's youth .
Former president of AMSU RK Itocha said the artificial famine of 1965 was the first visible fallout of influx of non-Manipuris in the State, who, taking advantage of the politeness and generosity of the people here migrated with an intention to drain the wealth of the State.
The subsequent people's agitation might have happened when people at that time rose to show their collective strength when there was scarcity of food .
AMSU is a student body formed at such trying situation when people's lives are at the peril.
As such, it still assumes a students' body whose journey is marked by myriad issues, Itocha said .
The issues which AMSU has taken up are major problems which cannot be solved through family, clan or district levels .
AMSU is not only a students' pressure group, but also an organisation which spearheaded many perplexed issues, he added.
He also suggested inclusion of 'discipline' in the motto of AMSU besides the existing 'Learn, serve, sacrifice.'
Former secretary general of AMSU Helen Lupho said that AMSU is a pressure group and not a political organisation.
It has taken a pro-active role to face crucial issues besetting the State.
He further suggested that AMSU expanded its role in bringing emotional integrity among the diverse cultures of the State .
After the function a blood donation camp was held at AMSU’s office.
