With a view to redress the nagging problem of non-payment of power tariff and unauthorised power connection, Electricity Department has started installing pre-paid power bill system in Paona bazar.
In the first phase, 1042 meter readers would be installed in Paona bazar and another 2058 in Thangal bazar for the pre-paid power bill system which would be introduced in March, informed an official source.
Each consumer should deposit Rs 5000 to Rs 7000 for installation of these meter system.
Once this deposited money is spent in the form of power bill, power connection would be cut off automatically until the consumer makes a fresh deposit.
In case consumers could not make fresh deposits due to Sundays or other holidays, their power connection would not be cut off immediately.
But the power tax incurred during the intervening period would be adjusted with the amount deposited afterward.
The new system would enable consumers to check their deposit details like balance and dates.
Once the pre-paid power bill system is fully installed, power department may be able to provide power supply for 17 to 18 hours in a day, the official said.
