Taking serious note of the shortage of water for human consumption and agriculture, despite receiving 1467.5 mm of rainfall annually on average, a high-power committee headed by the Chief Secretary has been constituted to investigate into causes of the water shortage as well as on possible measures to harvest rain water.

The committee would also formulate an action plan in this regard for implementation by the State Government.
The high power committee headed by the Chief Secretary as Chairman was constituted in accordance with a directive issued by the Union Planning Commission, which was acting on the instruction of the Supreme Court to find out water sources in scientific manner so that there is no shortage of water for human consumption as well as for agriculture in every States, conveyed an official source.
Further, a ministerial committee headed by the Chief Minister has also been constituted to tackle the same issue.
A meeting of the high-power committee was held today on the water shortage problem directly or indirectly related to large scale deforestation, soaring temperature and the drastic ecological changes.
The meeting chaired by Chief Secretary DS Poonia was attended by Commissioners and Secretaries of Environment and Ecology Wing, Science and Technology Department, IFCD, Minor Irrigation Department and Loktak Development Authority.
The meeting suggested relevant Departments to recommend all possible measures to tackle the problem of water shortage to the Government so that an effective action plan can be formulated to address the issue.
The meeting also studied on incorporating a component for retaining a day's water in the housing schemes taken up by the Government.
The high-power committee would formulate an action plan from the recommendations made by different departments.
Notably, the State Government has already declared Manipur drought affected.
