Properties worth about Rs 1.70 crore were destroyed by a devastating fire that razed Jakuradhar Bazar of Barak Circle, Jiribam last night around 8.25 .
Locals of Jakuradhar bazaar reported that the fire that broke out from the residence of Dhiru Das due to electric short circuit reduced many houses of the locality to cinders.
Locals said that at least eighty commercial shops and twenty dwelling houses of the bazaar area were gutted by the inferno.
The fire tender from Jiribam Fire service reached the spot at 10.30 pm and it was too late to save the bazaar from the devastating fire, locals said.
Further, the locals appealed to the Government of Manipur and the local MLA of Jiribam to provide one fire tender at Barak Circle, so that it may save people and their properties in such eventualities in future besides urging the Govt to provide relief to the victims.
Further the Jiribam Block Congress-I Committee (JBCC) members along with their President and Secretary rushed to Jakuradhar bazaar and consoled the victims.
Secretary of Barak Brothers' Union (BBU), D Lawmsanga said that the victims are currently camping at Rajiv Bhavan at Jakuradhar under the initiative of BBU.
At present 23 children and 73 elders are at the relief camp.
Further the secretary of BBU thanked the Police of Borobekra, 7th IRB personnel posted at Jakuradhor outpost and 27th Assam Rifles for their support to the fire victims.
Dr G Sunachand i/c CHC Jiribam along with 1 MO, 1 pharmacist and 3 attendants conducted a free medical camp for the victims and medicines were distributed free of cost.
