At the occasion, former Director of the Economics and Statistics Oinam Biren presented a paper on the topic 'Immigration to Manipur from the East and West and Its Impact on the Demography and Economy of Manipur'.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Gangmumei Kamei noted that the multi-ethnic and multi-religious State of Manipur has become a centre of corruption.
The situation demands thorough investigation by journalists into all fields related with public life.
Just as Anna Hazare is struggling against corruption in India, journalists of the State can reduce the level of corruption in Manipur by focusing more and more on investigative reporting.
Earlier, newspapers provided great influence to the public, and today media not only influence the mass but also control their actions, Prof Gangmumei stated.
With media becoming an essential daily requirement, the roles of media in the society have multiplied manifold, he said.
Thounaojam Iboyaima remarked that late RK Sanatomba was a martyr who dedicated his life for the cause of freedom and truth.
During his short life span, Sanatomba contributed many invaluable things for the society.
He would have contributed a lot more had he lived a little longer.
Iboyaima suggested the media to focus more on the causes of the poor, the peasants and the labourers.
Presenting his paper, O Biren, quoting the census report of 2001, said that 3,77,059 people immigrated into Manipur.
