Imphal, June 09 2024:
Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) coordinator Thokchom Somorendro has blamed the government's indifference with regard to recent torching of houses and police outposts in Jiribam district by Kuki narco-terrorists.
Addressing a press meet at COCOMI's office in Lamphel on Sunday, Somorendro stated that while the conflict which unfolded since May 3 last year can be said to have broken out suddenly, the recent events such as the burning of police outposts in Jiribam occurred due to the government's indifference and carelessness.
This holds true especially when multiple requests were made over the years to increase the number of IRB Battalion in Jiribam, police strength and police outposts but to no avail, he remarked.
He continued that while houses in Jiribam are being burned, the PM is engrossed in taking the oath.
The people's representatives too, instead of working together to safeguard the people, seem to have to have forgotten their duty to the people.
It would be better for the representatives to remember that their seats would cease to exist if Manipur is disintegrated, he cautioned.
While the additional security forces deployed to Jiribam are unable to reach the locations needed, AR is also preventing entry to the same.
Instead of using the additional forces to safeguard the people in vulnerable areas, the people are being evacuated from their homes.
This is highly similar to how people were evacuated from Moreh and Churachandpur in the name of safety before their homes were burned or razed to the ground, Somorendro said.
The COCOMI co-ordinator then said that conflict is nothing but a proxy war of the central government.
Although the duration of the SoO agreement with Kuki narco-terrorists lapsed, the people are left confused on the status quo.
As such, it is time to stop harbouring and protecting the Kuki narco-terrorists, he asserted.
Urging the government to enable the people to return to their homes within ten days, Somorendro cautioned that people would be forced to rise against the central and state governments in case of failing to do so.
