Workshop on improving livelihood held

The National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj - North Eastern Regional Centre (NIRDPR-NERC), Guwahati organised a one-day workshop on 'Institutionalising convergence of rural development programmes and resources' at the auditorium of State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Porompat on Friday.
The workshop aimed at improving livelihood of rural people with emphasis on different sectors was attended by several experts including NIRDPR faculty and workshop director Dr T Vijaya Kumar, who said that the main objective of holding the workshop is to identify special rural development programmes, chalk up development strategies and develop action plan for rural development and resources to improve livelihood of rural people.
According to Dr Vijaya, various programmes are being taken up to accelerate development in rural areas of the country and improve livelihood of rural people.
These programmes prioritise improving economy, social security and welfare of the people while government has been providing different funds for improving economy and livelihood of rural people, he said, adding that these programmes set a huge target to abolish poverty in the country.
While maintaining that development process will gain pace when different programmes are implemented together, Dr Vijaya cited watershed programme, National Agriculture Development Programme, National Horticulture Mission, scheme of artificial research of ground water through digging of well, BRGF and NREGA as examples and said that rural planning will be a huge success when these programmes are implemented simultaneously.
