Jiribam, June 13 2024:
A team of Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) on Wednesday visited the relief camps set up in different parts of the district in the wake of recent flare-up of ethnic violence.
Speaking to media persons during the visit, COCOMI co-ordinator Thokchom So-morendra deplored condition of around 250 displaced people staying in the relief camp opened at Bidyanagar Sports Complex.
As the said facility lacks space for such a sizable number of people, the district authorities need to make alternative arrangements to ensure the displaced families live in relative comfort, he stressed and suggested relocation of either the camp or some of the residents to spacious locations such as the Jiribam Higher Secondary School.
While stating that the team will apprise the plight of the displaced families to authority concerned, Somorendra expressed grave concern over reports of children residents losing consciousness owing to high temperature and overcrowding, as well as absence of doctors to attend to medical emergency.
Moreover, as the toilet and kitchen are in close proximity the residents are exposed to health threat due to lack of hygiene and sanitation, the coordinator opined, and urged authority concerned to address these problems.
