Imphal, November 11 2022:
Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO), Women Wing co-ordinator Pukhrimayum Hazira on Friday issued a press release condemning the City Police for defaming and arresting a banana seller in Khwairamband Ima Keithel (Imoinu) on November 9 for allegedly picking up some money, and then proceeding to brutally beat her up before releasing her after being found innocent.
As per the release, the actions of the police including making false allegations and beating up the vendor identified as Amina, is against humanity.
Thus, the organisation appealed to the police department to take strict disciplinary action against the personnel involved and give justice to the victim.
Amina, who is being treated at a hospital in Lilong, recounted to the MMWO Women Wing members that she was selling bananas as usual on the day of the incident, when two unidentified women approached her and demanded her to produce the money she allegedly picked up.
She denied picking up any money and asked the two women not to make any false accusations.
The two women then dragged her to a vehicle and took her to City PS.
At the PS, she was brutally beaten up and questioned for more than 2-3 hours regarding the whereabouts of the money.
Afterwards, when no evidence could be found to prove the false accusations, she was declared innocent and released.
Stating that detaining a woman in a police station and beating her up without even registering an FIR is against the law, the Women Wing appealed to the authority concerned to take strict action against the personnel involved.
