Imphal, August 10 2025:
Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar on Sunday opined that lack of skill-oriented curriculum in the present education system forces students to rely solely on government jobs after their studies.
He made the remark while attending the 33rd Annual Prize Distribution-2025 programme of Association for the Promotion of Meritorious Students of Chingmeirong, held at the Thangjam Birachandra and Mai-pakpi community hall.
The event, presided over by association president Dr Sinam Subhaschandra Singh, was also attended by Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd real estate manager Yumnam Rajeshwor Singh, Babina Group director Dr Momocha Thangjam, and Regional Sericulture Research Centre head scientist Dr Sinam Subharani Devi as guests of honour.
In his speech, Arunkumar said that knowledge alone does not make a good citizen and must be accompanied by morality, which includes discipline, integrity, and tradition.
He emphasised that teaching practical skills alongside academic subjects would enable students to earn a living without depending on government employment, and could also produce successful entrepreneurs.
He praised the association's efforts to recognise academic achievers, sportspersons, and artistes, saying that such recognition motivates young people to work harder.
Noting that many families in Chingmeirong area cannot afford private coaching, the MLA suggested that the association organise free coaching classes for Class 10 and 12 students to bridge the gap.
Arunkumar also urged students to take part in community activities and work for public welfare, fostering patriotism from a young age.
The event honoured class toppers from nursery to Class 9, as well as students who cleared the Class 10 and 12 board exams under BSEM, COHSEM, and CBSE.
Awards were also presented to sportspersons and artistes with notable achievements.
