Imphal, February 19 2025:
Members of the Pambei-led UNLF reportedly rescued an injured Indian flying fox/fruit bat and handed over the same to People for Animals (PFA), Manipur.
As per a release issued by PFA managing trustee L Biswajeet Meitei, the said bat species used to be hunted for its meat, due to superstition and causing economic loss to humans by attacking fruit bearing trees, subsequently leading to its categorisation under Schedule V of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which permit hunting and killing.

However, in view of its environmental significance and dwindling numbers the bat species was re-categorised to Schedule II during amendment of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 in 2022, making it protected species and killing and hunting, a punishable offence.
Indian flying fox plays a major role in pollination and seed dispersal of plants.
The animal is significant in reforestation of depleted forests and fruiting of Manipur's major foods 'Yongchak' (stinky bean) and banana trees.
In banana varieties that have seeds, they are the only animal who can pollinate it through their long tongue and after the trees bear the bananas it helps in dispersal of the seeds.
In case these bat species had gone extinct then the old banana varieties would have perished as well, explained the managing trustee, adding that the bat rescued from Yaithibi camp of the UNLF in Thoubal district, will be released to its natural habitat after it gains fitness.
