N Tombi Raj honoured with Thiyam Premkumar Award

Thiyam Premkumar Award, which is given annually by Sahitya Thoupang Lup on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, has been conferred to former PTI Imphal correspondent and former AMWJU president Ningthoukhongjam Tombi Raj.
The award distribution function held at Manipur Press Club here on Tuesday was attended by All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) president Wangkhemcha Shamjai, Editor's Guild Manipur president Khogendra Khomdram and Wangkhei A/C MLA Thangjam Arunkumar as the presidium members.
Speaking at the event, MLA Arunkumar highlighted the significant role of the media in leading the society towards the right path.
The journalists who have been working day and night to make sure that people are well informed should be encouraged and acknowledged, he said.
Recalling that Thiyam Premkumar took a vital role in setting up of Manipur Information Centre in New Delhi in 1981, Arunkumar remembered Premkumar as a person who dedicated his life in the field of journalism.
He assured of extending all possible help as an elected representative of people for the welfare of journalists.
The award included Rs 10,000 in cash, a citation and a stole.
As a part of the event, MU School of Humanities Dean Prof N Aruna chaired a poetry reading session dedicating to departed people.
In all, 32 poems dedicating to 21 renowned people of Manipur, two each from Bangladesh and Tripura, five from Assam and three from Myanmar, who lost their lives during Covid-19 pandemic, were read out.
One minute's silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
