Betraying nature for selfish motives biggest sin: Asnikumar
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, May 22 2021: BJP Manipur Pradesh spokesperson and MDS chairman M Asnikumar, who is also an environmentalist, has said that human beings share a special relationship with the earth and betraying it for their own selfish motives amounts to committing the biggest sin.

In a message on the occasion of International Biodiversity Day 2021, Asnikumar said that the day is being observed under the theme 'We are part of solution - for nature' after the United Nations adopted May 22 as International Day for Biological Diversity in December 2000.This day is often overlooked and it is understandable as people are busy trying to outdo each other in this age of rapid development and growth.

But the current trend and trajectory of developmental practices will have serious consequences for the diversity not just of the region but for the globe as a whole.

Biological diversity of a region ensures natural sustainability of all life forms within the region.

There is a saying "We are what we make of ourselves".

The state is blessed with numerous bio resources and it would not be wrong to say that the state's biological and economic future depends on it.

The statement might seem oxymoronic at first but it is true.

There is a greater need to utilise the state's resources in a bio-economic context, which is not going to be easy but is certainly possible.

This would not only ensure better reliance but also reduce economic dependence on others.

However, it would be completely futile and meaningless if the strategy of utilising the bio resources is not sustainable in the long run because it is the children and the younger generations that the people should be worried of.

There are two options - either to rely on the outside world for economic avenues or utilise the state's own bio resources to sustain its people.

The latter strategy would be sensible choice even though it won't be easy and would certainly come with accountability.

This particular strategy augurs well for the state which is blessed with enormous bio resources.

But it is certainly better than being dependent and indebted to the outside world.

The current circumstance has shown the whole world that nothing in life should be taken for granted.

Also, it has shown the harsh reality that the world is a better place when human beings do not fiddle with its aesthetic and spiritual originality.

One such example is sighting of dolphins in Venice when the world shut down in the face of the Coronavirus.

Further he said, taking this year's theme as a guiding force, environmentally ethical and sustainable techniques of utilising earth's bio resources should always be the top priority.

It is the duty and responsibility of the present generation to leave an environmentally sustainable future for the generations, he added.
