Jiribam, April 19 2024:
In pursuance of various demands, drivers operating on the NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam) have called and enforced indefinite bandh along the highway from early Friday morning with vehicles ceasing operation on the said route on the first day of the bandh.
Many drivers came out and started blocking vehicles in Sorok Atingbi area of Jiribam district from 6am by squatting on the road.
Though few local vehicles were allowed to pass through, those engaged by companies for the railway project and inter-district vehicles were prevented from plying on the highway.
According to the agitating drivers, regardless of the fact that goods being transported are not meant for them but for people of all communities settling in Manipur, drivers are targeted frequently with the recent one being the Keimai firing incident.
They vowed not call off the agitation till fulfilment of their demands for enhancing security and effective crackdown on anti-social elements.
