Jiribam, June 12 2024:
Bengali community, who runs shops and establishments in Barak circle under Borobekra subdivision of Jiribam district, has reacted strongly to a viral social media post alleging that Bengali shopkeepers are not entertaining the Meetei customers.
Around 50 members of the Bengali community, along with Jagrador Gram Panchayat Pradhan called on inspector Seram Suresh of Borobekra police station around 10 am on Wednesday regarding the viral post.
During the meeting, Bengali shopkeepers informed the inspector that none of them had ever refused to sell goods to people of Meetei community.
They emphasised that everyone, regardless of community or caste, is welcome at their shops and that goods are sold to all customers.
The Bengali representatives expressed dismay over the malicious allegations levelled against them, while highlighting the potential of such unfounded posts on social media in stoking hatred between communities, who have been co-existing peacefully.
They further urged the inspector to issue a statement to the media, highlighting that the viral social media post was entirely false and without merit.
The Bengali shopkeepers also warned that they would shut down all shops if this clarification was not promptly issued to which inspector assured issuances of the clarification within short notice.
