Training of IDPs on 'Kanna' grass craft begins

A four-day training programme on 'Kauna Grass Craft Products' organised by Thoubal district administration for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) was inaugurated by Thou bal deputy commissioner (DC) Ahanthem Subhash on Tuesday at the relief camp set up at Riee Research Station, Khangabok.
The programme was also attended by Thoubal assistant deputy commissioner (ADC) Arbin Hanglem, Lata Handicraft proprietor Khundrakpam Lata and master trainer Angom Sangeeta, a resident of the relief camp, as presidium members.
In his address, DC Subhash said the district administration has been conducting various skill development programmes for the IDPs staying in relief camps at Kodompokpi Sports Complex; Rice Research Centre and Lamding High School to provide source of income generation.
The products made by the camp residents including 'Kouna' (water reed) items, candle and detergent have fetched Rs 7-8 lakh revenue in total till now, disclosed the DC while stressing in sync with increase in demand of their products, there is need for more skilled workers to step up the production.
Stating that the IDPs would be the sole beneficiaries of income generated from items they are producing as there would be no middlemen involved in sale of the same, he also disclosed that Manipur Handloom & Handicrafts Corporation Limited is ready to bulk purchase their wares and in case unsold items the district administration will acquire them.
Further informing that 39 people have registered for the training, he commended newly appointed ADC Arbind Hanglem for tying up with various firms from state and outside to promote sale of products made by IDPs.
