Imphal, December 29 2024:
Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) has strongly condemned the targeted attack on video journalist Leimapokpam Kabichandra (Kabi) of Impact TV, who was shot by a sniper at Sanasabi village, Imphal East, on Saturday.
In a statement, MIYC said that Kabi, clearly identifiable by his press jacket, sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh, and termed the attack as a deliberate and reprehensible act perpetrated by Kuki militants.
Citing international humanitarian law, MIYC emphasised that journalists in conflict zones are civilians under Article 79 of the Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, which protects them from violence.
The organisation also highlighted United Nations Security Council Resolutions 2222 and 1738, which mandate the protection of media professionals in armed conflicts.
MIYC called the attack as an act of terrorism under international law, violating Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions, which prohibits violence against non-combatants.
The organisation urged the Central government to conduct an impartial investigation and called on all parties to respect the rights of journalists and ensure their safety.
