Students join World Ozone Day run

In connection with the observance of World Ozone Day-2024, Science & Technology minister Thongam Biswajit flagged off an Ozone Run' for students in Imphal area on Friday.
In all, 200 students participated in the event, wherein the participants carried placards inscribed with the slogans, "The future is bright, if the zone if tight", "No Ozone means No outdoor fun", "Save the Ozone, it is the only air-conditioning the earth needs", "Protect the zone and it will protect you", etc.
After the run flagged off from Manipur Science Centre, Takyel culminated at the same location, the main ceremony was held at the centre's auditorium with Science & Technology director Homila Hongrei, senior scientific officer (DST) M Ramo Singh, joint secretary Sashi Chingakham and MASTEC director Dr L Minaketan as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Homila Hongrei cautioned that without ozone, humankind cannot live on this planet as it provides protection from the harsh sunlight including ultraviolet rays.
As the Ozone layer is sheltering all living beings it is our responsibility to maintain the same, she said while clarifying that the event was initially planned on September 16 but had to be deferred due to the conflict.
The director stressed the need for causing awareness amongst the masses about the importance of ozone layer and reduce the use of machines with high emission levels.
She further suggested planting more trees and conserving the environment.
DMU former VC Prof N Rajmuhon also attended the observance as resource person.
