Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, December 18 2022: Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) director Prof L Deben has stated that the only state-funded medical institute in the state, is developing in a stable and successful manner including the increase in MBBS intake capacity from 100 to 150.Presiding over the 15th Foundation Day of JNIMS, which was celebrated at the auditorium of the Institute on Sunday, Prof Deben presented the annual report, while recalling the registration of the institute under the Manipur Registrar Society Act, 1989 in 2008 .

Since its inception, JNIMS has not only been imparting medical education but also providing health care services.

Presently, there are 667 MBBS students, 275 BDS students and 185 PG students studying at the Institute.

In addition, JNIMS has produced 701 medical graduates, 42 BDS (currently undergoing internship) and 154 doctors till date.

In the MBBS Phase-II examination conducted by Manipur University in 2022, the first two positions were bagged by JNIMS students.

The pass percentage in Professional Part-Ill MBBS was 96 per cent and Part-II was 92 per cent, he added.

He continued; "Under the supervision of CM Biren, who is also the president of JNIMS Society, around 20 new courses including MD in Psychiatry were introduced, in addition to increasing the seat intake of MD Medicine from 2 seats to 12 seats.

On top of this, the MBBS seat intake has been increased from 100 to 150 .

The faculty members have also taken up 15 projects under the funding of DBT, ICMR, WHO, etc,, with around 58 papers published by the faculty of JNIMS on COVID-19 pandemic.

"At present, JNIMS has around 767 beds including 93ICU/HDU beds and 10 beds in the COVID Ward.

After the CMHT scheme was launched January 21, 2018, around 8834 patients have been greatly benehtted inchiding seven availing free kidney transplantation service.

The PMIAY scheme which was launched later on September 18 in the same year allowed 4803 patients to avail free healthcare and 8 kidney transplants for free.

JNIMS is the first among the northeastern states to carry out cochlear implant surgery successfully under the Assistance to Disable Persons Scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

The ENT department of the Institute has so far carried out the cochlear implant surgeries on around 50 young patients for free.

"Meanwhile, on top of the existing PSA-1 and LMO Plant (10KL), PSA-2 and PSA-3 began operations on August 10 this year.

Boeing India Company had donated a CT scan (50 Slice), Colour Doppler Ultrasound and CR Machine under CR and Doctors for You project, which were installed by the CM on December 18, 2021.On May 3 this year, the CM inaugurated a 10-bedded Tele-ICU Hub and a 30-bedded Psychiatry Ward on June 11.The CM also inaugurated a newly renovated patient waiting shed area for patient patients; a child care centre for female staff of the institute, and Gents Hostel No.3 and Ladies Hostel No.3, which could house a total of 150 students.

The construction of another Gents Hostel, which could house 150 students, is nearing completion, along with 18-bedded private ward.

The Karkinos Manipur Cancer Institute, which was set up based on the PPP model, began its OPD services on November 23.Once it becomes fully operational, it will have the necessary equipment for treatment of cancer," Prof Deben elaborated, while informing that efforts are underway to set up a Cath Lab as well.

In his speech as the chief guest, Health director Khoirom Shasheeku-mar commented that JNIMS has been able to showcase its success stories over the past 15 years to the masses.

He said that just like the human body, an organisation also has its birth stage, infantile stage and maturity stage.

Since its establishment, JNIMS has been developing in the right direction and serving the people with full sincerity.

The director then said that it is important for us to be flexible and adapt to the changes brought on by the passage of time.

In a similar manner, we need to utilise the changing medical knowledge including usage of new equipment, technology and treatment styles in care of patients.

Failing to do is detrimental in all aspects.

Any institute or organisation should keep a moderate outlook and implement the initiatives of the government, he stated, while advising against the mindset of depending solely on government funding but rather trying to earn their own revenue.

The celebration was also attended by Churachandpur Medical College professor S Iboyaima; RIMS director Prof L Ranjit; Shija Academy of Health Sciences Prof M Amuba; JNIMS MS Prof Kh Lokeshwor; JNIMS dean (academics) Prof T Rajen; Dental College, JNIMS principal Prof Nidarsh D Hegde; and head of Department of Surgery, JNIMS cum Organising secretary Prof N Somorjit as guests of honour.

As part of the celebration, the dignitaries released a souvenir and a magazine, followed by presentation of awards to the meritorious students of various examinations conducted by MU.

Certificates and cash prizes were distributed to the top 3 cleanest wards of the hospital, with Antenatal Ward bagging the first position, Female Surgery Ward second and Female Orthopaedics Ward third position.
