Man arrested for killing hog deer

Bishnupur, April 15 2023:
Bishnupur Forest Division along with Manipur police arrested a man for killing a hog deer, locally known as Kharsa, an endangered species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, on Saturday.
The arrested poacher has been identified as Moirangmayum Nasir Khan (37) s/o Tomba of Paobitek Mayai Leikai.
A single barrel gun with three live rounds and Rs 2000 in cash have also been recovered from him.
Parading the Nasir at Bishnupur Forest division office, divisional forest officer Dr Re-bika Soibam Chanu informed that after receiving specific information that some poachers have intruded into Loktak Lake where the hog deers feed, Bishnupur additional SP (LO) Satyam Takhellambam, Toubul VDF and Imphal West additional SP (LO) Bishorjit Moirangmayum were informed following which the team managed to arrest Nasir Khan along with the gun.
He had also killed a female hog deer while another male hog deer missed his shot.
Rebika further informed that patrolling in Loktak area to prevent killing of protected animals is being carried on a regular basis following reports that poachers are hunting animals in the area.
"We have been able to arrest one poacher today due to the support and cooperation provided by the public to the forest department," she said.
Stating that the arrested person will be given befitting punishment according to the Act, Rebika appealed to all to protect various birds and animals including hog deer and wild boar and preserve the biodiversity.
