MMTU plans nationwide ST demand campaign

In pursuance of its demand for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei community in the ST list of the Indian Constitution, Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MMTU) plans to launch campaign in New Delhi.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Thursday, MMTU secretary Mutum Churamani said the demand for granting ST status to Meeteis/Meiteis has been lingering for over a decade.
Despite growing awareness of the issue, the state government is yet to address it seri ously.
Consequently, following guidance from senior members and experts, MMTU is set to launch a nationwide campaign to advocate for inclusion of the Meeteis in the ST category.
He also announced that a delegation of MMTU will leave for Delhi between September 13 and 15, and then fan out across the country to meet prominent figures, including religious and political leaders and seek their support for inclusion of the Meeteis/Meiteis in the ST list of Indian Constitution.
Expressing hope of a positive response to the campaign, Churamani stated that the union is ready to address any queries from outsiders regarding Manipur.
He also urged experts who have not yet been contacted but are concerned about the issue to reach out to MMTU and share their invaluable advice.
Emphasising the importance of including Meeteis/Meiteis in the ST list to ensure Constitutional safeguards, he also highlighted the need for state's political parties and politicians to advocate for this issue and work towards granting of ST status to the Meeteis/Meiteis.
