Pallel, May 21 2024:
In a hopeful sign of reconciliation amidst the ongoing ethnic conflict gripping Manipur since May 3 last year, members of the Meetei and Kuki communities were seen mingling at Pallel Bazar.
This small town, located at the boundary of Kakching and Tengnoupal districts, displayed a rare moment of normalcy with individuals from both communities engaging in their daily activities without any visible signs of animosity.
A team of media persons observed the scene on Tuesday afternoon, noting that this might be the first instance since the outbreak of violence that members of both the communities were seen coexisting peacefully.
Despite an underlying sense of uneasiness, people from both sides were observed having meals at same hotels and shopping at the same stores.
Kuki individuals were seen purchasing items from Meetei-owned shops and vice versa, suggesting a semblance of restored trust and cooperation.
One notable observation was the absence of overt hostility; at a glance, there was no discernible animosity between the two communities.
However, the palpable sense of unease hinted at the fragile nature of this emerging peace.
To ensure the situation remained calm, Pallel police maintained a close watch, ready to prevent any potential disturbances.
During interactions with the media, members from both Meetei and Kuki communities voiced strong desire for the state government to take proactive steps towards resolving the crisis through peaceful means.
Reflecting a broader sentiment within both communities, they called for both the government and civil society organisations (CSOs) to collaborate in restoring peace and mutual respect.
Such efforts, they emphasised, are crucial for rebuilding a stronger and united Manipur.
Many Kuki community members expressed weariness from the conflict, noting that a significant number of them do not support the ongoing violence but feel silenced due fear of repercussions.
They pointed out that some influential figures might be misleading impressionable youth, thus, exacerbating tensions.
Meetei community members also highlighted the importance of Pallel as a bustling trade hub.
Despite its small size, Pallel thrives due to its strategic location along the Imphal-Moreh highway, which facilitates border trade between India and Myanmar.
This vibrant centre brings together people from different communities across the state, contributing to their livelihoods.
However, the ongoing ethnic conflict has severely dampened the once jovial atmosphere in the town, with residents feeling reluctant to enjoy the carefree environment they once cherished.
While the situation has improved significantly, a lot remains to be done to restore Pallel to its former glory.
The call for peace and reconciliation was echoed by various community members, who stressed the importance of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence to overcome the current crisis.
Their hopes rest on collaborative efforts to bring an end to the violence and restore the once harmonious relationship between the Meetei and Kuki communities.
The cautious optimism observed in this small town could pave the way for broader peace initiatives across the state, fostering a renewed commitment to unity and harmony.
