Crackdown against numberless vehicles begins

As part of security measures being taken up for Manipur Sangai Festival-2022, the state transport department conducted drive against vehicles without registration number and high security number plates at different parts of Imphal on Sunday.
During the drive conducted at different places of Imphal West and Imphal East districts, vehicles without number plates and registration numbers were detained and drivers given warning.
Meanwhile, transport minister Khashim Vashum informed media persons that the state's biggest tourism festival 'Manipur Sangai Festival-2022' will begin from Monday.
Ahead of the festival, there were reports of involvement of vehicles without number plates and registration numbers in road accidents and incidents relating to breach of law & order and accordingly conducted the drive.
The transport department had already issued a notification in this regard and the drive was conducted not to cause inconvenience to public but to prevent unwanted incidents, he reasoned and appealed to the public to extend support to the drive.
According to Khashim Vashum, the transport department has arranged dedicated public transport system for ferrying visitors to three main venues of Manipur Sangai Festival-2022 namely Moirang Khunou, Hapta Kangjeibung and Ibudhou Marjing complex, Heingang.
Parking arrangement at these venues too had been made and Rs 20 will be charged for two-wheelers and Rs 50 for four wheelers.
Fare for boarding MST bus bound for Moirang Khunou will be Rs 80 and Rs 240 for Mao and fare rates are same for return journey, he added.
Replying to a query raised by media persons, minister Khashim Vashum said that the state transport department has made special arrangement for transportation of visitors.
Those interested in visiting festivals venues like Moirang Khunou and Mao may board bus from transport complex at Moirangkhom and those interested in visiting other venues like Hapta Kangjeibung and Ibudhou Marjing could board Tata magic/ winger from near Johnstone Higher Secondary School.
The transport arrangement is being done to reduce congestion of private vehicles around festival venues, he said and appealed to public to extend support to the arrangement being made by the state transport department.
On the other hand, minister Khashim Vashum disclosed that semi-low floor buses provided to the state by the Centre under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) will be auctioned soon after signing an MoU with the state MAHUD department.
He said that there are numerous complaints about buses provided under JNNURM gathering dust in the state and the buses provided to the MAHUD department are unsuitable for roads in the state.
The department is trying to replace the existing JNNURM buses with those having 24-34 seats capacity, he added.
