Imphal, July 19 2024:
In an effort to ensure safety of students commuting in vehicles, Traffic Control Police (TCP) Wing of the Trans port Department has reiterated the importance of adhering to the maximum student limit in school vehicles and asked schools as well as transporter associations to strictly follow relevant guidelines.
The directive has come in the wake of growing concerns over students crammed in vehicles and risks to safety and well-being of students, a concern also highlighted by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (CORS) .
In a statement, Traffic Control Police SP Wungpam Kasar specified that no vehicle belonging to or used by any educational institution should seat children in excess of 1.5 times its registered capacity.
Overloading vehicles beyond their capacity not only violates the law but also significantly increases the likelihood of accidents and injuries, particularly during sudden braking or collisions.
The statement emphasised the need for strict enforcement of these regulations by schools and school vehicle associations.
The Traffic Control Police Wing will take action under section 194A of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 against drivers of school vehicles who do not comply with the specified seating capacity, it added.
"The safety of school students is paramount, and collective efforts are essential to safeguard the well-being of bur future generations on the roads," the statement said.
