Imphal, July 17 2024:
Time has come for shouldering collective responsibility to bring an end to the ongoing violence or else there will be no future for the people of Manipur, stated Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam during the 'Writers' Day - 2024' .
As chief guest of the 'Writers' Day - 2024' organised by Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti, Imphal at Manipur Press Club, here, on Wednesday, MLA Shyam noted that the people are aware about undercurrent of the ongoing violence and equally concerned with whether Manipur could survive the crisis.
While Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi, Churachandpur and Moreh, among others, are off-limited for the Meeteis, there is no restriction on Kukis as could be comprehended from the community acting independently in the hills.
Moreover, Kukis' involvement in deforestation and poppy plantation without any intervention coupled with the government's inability to control these illegal activities are worrisome, he said.
According to Karam Shyam, the future of Manipur will be unpredictable if the present as well as future threat to state's integrity could not be neutralised thereby entailing collective fight to secure Manipur's future.
Calling upon the political class, intellectuals and every section of the society including those who have taken up arms to unite and deliberate on finding solution instead of accusing one another, the MLA stressed on the need for those in the field of literature to join hands in bringing an end to the conflict.
Discipline used to be the hallmark of Manipuri society with high regard for elderly but the society having over 3000 years of written history is today seeing signs of the present generation, the youths in particular, disregarding social norms, Shyam opined and emphasised the need for imparting discipline and tradition of the society to young children and youth.
The event also attended by Samiti's Imphal president Naoroibam Indramani was marked by a symposium on Manipur literature and a lecture on 'Impact of Hinduism in Manipur' presented by professor Dr N Birchandra of Lilong Haoreibi College.
Earlier, the new edition of journal 'Wakhal' was released while Samiti's 'Writer of the Year-2024 (lifetime achievement) ' was presented to professor Nongmaithem Tombi.
Elderly founder members of the Samiti namely Nameirakpam Madhusudon, Rk Chourajit and Khomdram Nan-dakishore were also honoured on the occasion.
