Imphal, October 15 2024:
National People's Party (NPP) has voiced disappointment over exclusion of its MLAs from the meeting convened by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in Delhi on Tuesday, aimed at addressing the ongoing crisis in the state.
NPP national vice-president Y Joykumar expressed frustration, stating that none of the party's seven MLAs - in-spite of the NPP being a key ally of the NDA both at the Centre and in the state - were invited for the talks.
Joykumar criticised the MHA's decision to sideline the party, which has representation from both Meetei and Naga communities, during discussions on a crisis impacting the entire state.
While the party welcomes the initiative by the MHA, it is not right to exclude NPP from such a significant meeting.
Such decision only raises questions about whether NPP should continue or withdraw its support to the BJP, he remarked.
The exclusion comes amid rising tensions within the NPP, which had earlier expressed dissatisfaction with handling of the situation in Manipur.
The issue of the party's continued support for the BJP is now being revisited, with Joykumar indicating that the MHA's actions have further strained the alliance.
Last month, Meghalaya chief minister and NPP president Conrad Sangma expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in Manipur and urged the Government of India to intervene.
Sangma pointed to the complexity of the conflict, citing historical tensions and the diversity of communities involved.
He emphasised that a political solution is necessary to restore peace and called for the involvement of all communities in finding a resolution.
"The current situation in Manipur is extremely complex.
It requires the Government of India's intervention to bring all communities together on one platform.
Only through a collective political solution can we move forward and restore confidence across the state," Sangma had said.
