Training of Oak Tasar farmers begins

A weeklong residential beneficiary training programme organised by Directorate of Sericulture, Manipur under RKVY-RAFTAAR 2021-22 for Oak Tasar farmers began at the Directorate's project management complex from Monday.
The inaugural function of the training programme was attended by Sericulture director Bidyarani Ayekpam as chief guest, deputy director K Kachui as president and RSRS, Mantripukhri scientist-D and head Dr Y Debraj Singh as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Bidyarani pointed out that Manipur has great potential for development in sericulture sector as it has been one of the largest producers of silk products in the country.
However, the production level has been declining compared to the past, she said while informing that the state government has been giving special focus on enhancing silk production.
Ministry of Textiles also aims to improve silk textiles industry and ensure self-sufficiency within 2023, she added.
The director further pointed out that there is huge demand for silk not only in the state but also in other states and countries and as such stressed on the importance of expand -ing the Tasar plantation area as it is suitable to soil in the state.
While revealing that the training programme will discuss about new technologies for increasing productivity, Bidyarani remarked that there will be no improvement if the farmers do not work hard despite initiatives taken up by the government.
She then advised the trainees to attend the programme sincerely and work together for increasing production of silk in the state.
