Imphal, April 23 2024:
As the state is busy observing the Khongjom Day, commemorating the historic and decisive battle fought at Khongjom between Manipur and British forces in 1891, well-armed Kuki militants launched a fresh offensive from Luwangsangol Phaileng village in Kangpokpi district towards Sekmai in Imphal West targeting civilians working on stone quarry in Sekmai River on Tuesday.
Sources said that the Kuki militants attacked the quarry workers in Sekmai River in the vicinity of Luwangsangol Phaileng village.
As the workers heard the burst of gunshots directed towards them, they fled the quarry and took cover at safer locations.
Upon receiving the information, some village volunteers of the area rushed in to retaliate the attack.
Later, Sekmai police and central security forces deployed in the nearby area also rushed in and exchanged fire with the Kuki militants till around noon.
After a pause of around two hours, the Kuki militants continued their offensive non-stop and by evening, they started using bombs to target people living in the foothill areas.
There is no report of any casualty till the time of filing this report.
