Imphal, June 12 2024:
All Manipur Nupi Marup has urged the state government to hold a special session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly to discuss the best way to deescalate tension gripping Jiribam and restore peace in the border district.
In a release, the Marup opined that the government needs to convene a special session to discuss the prevailing tension in Jiribam as well as for resolving the conflict in the state which has been lingering for over a year now.
Additionally, the government should identify and punish those who orchestrated the violence, torched houses and slaughtered innocent people, apart from taking a firm stand on the matter.
Pointing out that elected representatives blaming each other would not help ease tension in Jiribam, the women's organisation criticised blame game between the opposition and the ruling parties while cautioning that armed Kuki militants are gearing up for unleashing more violence.
It further questioned the inability to relocate the displaced people in Borobekra to safer relief camps.
As such, it urged for provision of adequate security to carry out relocation exercise, while lamenting over the silence of the prime minister and union home minister in this regard.
It then said that with the swearing in of the new PM Modi-led government, time has come to put an end to the conflict.
Union home minister Amit Shah should stand by his words of solving the crisis in Manipur after the election.
On the other hand, the CM's visit to Jiribam district may be a good step; but it would not be a long-term solution.
Thus, a special session of the Assembly needs to be convened to come up with a concrete resolution to the crisis, the Marup asserted.
