Imphal, September 07 2022:
Women Action for Development (WAD) strongly condemned the assault on a 65 year old woman fish seller namely Ningthoujam Mangolngan bi Devi of Tera Khuraijam Leirak.
In a release, WAD stated that on September 4 around 8.30 pm one drunken man identified as Haobijam Babuchouba Singh of Tera Sapam Leirak came to the place where Mangolnganssbi was selling fish at the roadside of Tera Lukram Leirak Machin and started hurling abuses at the fish vendor and assaulted her.
"The other vendors tried to stop the assault but in vain.
The assault must have lasted about 15 minutes.
Mangolnganbi sustained severe injuries due to the assault.
She was admitted at Hospital", WAD continued, adding that Babuchouba Singh is serving as a sub-inspector in the Telecom (wireless) department, Manipur.
It then said that it was very unfortunate that a man serving in the home department committed such outrageous act on an aged woman, who is also a widow earning livelihood for her family, by kicking her shoulder which led to severe injuries on her neck and chest, and left her with fractured bone that resulted in her hospitalisation.
WAD questioned the government as to how a person whose job is to protect the people could commit such a horrific act to the senior citizen who is a bread winner of the family.
"Even if senior citizens are not spared then what will be the young women and girls' future? This is the need of the hour that every citizen come together and fight against such horrific and inhuman act committed by the police who are to protect citizens from any incidents occurring in the state", WAD said.
Considering the brutality of the incident, WAD members rushed to the spot to know the facts about the incident and also had conversation with the victim's family who told them that doctor advised Mangolnganbi to take rest and stop working for 3 months which was very unfortunate for the family whose bread earner is the victim, WAD lamented.
It then urged the Governor and the chief minister of state to direct the police to arrest the accused immediately.
"In this connection, WAD filed a complaint with the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) seeking for directing the police to register an FIR and ensure prompt, thorough and impartial investigation", WAD added.
