AR pays homage to Maj Bob Khathing

Director General Assam Rifles Lt Gen PC Nair along with IG Assam Rifles Maj Gen Rajan Sharawat on Tuesday paid homage to the iconic figure of the North East, Maj Bob Khathing, at Imphal on the occasion of his birth anniversary in the presence of John Khating, son of Maj Bob Khathing, and other dignitaries of both military and civil.
While recounting that Major Bob Khathing was a legendary figure from the North East, who had served with the famous V Force during World War II, and was awarded the Military Cross and Member of the British Empire (MBE) for his gallant, PRO IGAR (S) said in a statement that apart from his committed service in Assam during the calamitous earthquake of 1950, Major Khathing played key roles in the transitional period in the state of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Sikkim.
Major Khathing's name has special relevance to Arunachal Pradesh where he served as the Assistant Political Officer in erstwhile NEFA.
He was also the first officer to successfully unfurl the Indian Tricolour at Tawang in 1951.Owing to his immense contribution to the North East Region he was awarded the "Padmashree" by the first President of India Dr Rajendra Prasad in 1957.DG Assam Rifles during his short speech, recalled the valuable contribution of Maj Bob Khathing at erstwhile NEFA and his overall contribution towards peace and security of the North East India.
The DG also thanked the presence of family members of the hero and highlighted the importance of remembering the contributions of those who helped shape the vibrant and ever developing North-East that it is today.
A felicitation ceremony from the Khathing family was also conducted during the event for Tangkhul students who topped in class 10th and 12th board examinations in various streams and cash prizes along with certificates were distributed.
A total of 13 students from various parts of India received the awards during the function, which was very well received by the audiences for whom the name Major Bob Khathing will stand to inspire generations of the youth in years to come, the PRO added.
In a relevant development, Somsai Battalion of IGAR (South) inaugurated the memorial statue of Major Bob Khathing and organised the closing ceremony of his 111th birth anniversary tournament on Monday in Ukhrul district.
The unveiling of the statue was carried out by John SR Khathing, son of Major Bob Khathing, and Hunphun village head in the presence of the Raleng clan.
Meanwhile, the 9th Major Bob Khathing Tournament culminated with the men's football final which was won by HPFA after a thrilling penalty shootout.
Chief guest of the closing ceremony, John SR Khathing addressed the huge gathering while the closing, remarks were given by commander 10 Sector Assam Rifles, who congratulated and appreciated all associated especially the spirited participants.
It was then followed by the prize distribution ceremony for the winners and runner-ups of the women's volleyball, baby league and men's football tournament.
The popular tournament was undertaken by Assam Rifles in association with Ukhrul District Sports Association (UDSA) from February 20 to 27 .
The celebration was witnessed by youth, women, students, teachers and people from all walks of life.
The spirit of the teams, support of the locals and cheer spread by this event was heartwarming.
The people of Ukhrul extended their gratitude to Assam Rifles for hosting the hugely successful tournament and offering tribute to late Major Bob Khathing.
