Imphal, October 24 2021:
The Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) and All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) have strongly condemned the attack on journalist Elangbam Rameshwor, who is Thoubal correspondent of Naharolgi Thoudang daily, by unknown miscreants on Sunday.
"This is considered as attack on freedom of expression and we urge authorities concerned to take necessary action and book the culprit(s) at the earliest," said a release signed by EGM president Khogendra Khomdram and AMWJU acting president S Bokuljaoba.
The release also urged parties in dispute to raise any matter related to publication of news with the editors concerned before taking action on any working journalists.
"If the matter cannot be resolved between the two, the same may be brought up to either AMWJU or EGM for resolution," the joint release advised and cautioned that any action oil journalists will not be tolerated by both AMWJU and EGM.
While extending support to the ailing journalist, the two bodies also shared the misfortune that befell on Rameshwor's family and extended its moral support.
Kakching District Journalists' Association (KADJA) also vehemently condemned the assault of Rameshwor, who is incumbent vice president of Thoubal District Working Journalists' Union.
Stating that around 20 people claiming to be workers of Heirok Block Congress assaulted Rameshwor at his residence at about 7am on Sunday, KADJA decried the attack on journalist Rameshwor as an act of dishonouring the entire journalist fraternity.
It also urged the government to take up immediate necessary steps to punish the attackers and vowed to support whatever decision Thoubal District Working Journalists' Union takes on the matter.
